\nOur work began two decades ago in Madagascar\u2019s remote coastal communities and is
\ngrowing globally.
\nAcross a dozen countries, we\u2019re partnering with traditional fishers and community
\norganisations to design, scale, strengthen, and sustain fisheries management and
\nconservation at the community level. We bring partners together in networks to advocate
\nfor reform and share tools and best practices to support fishing communities worldwide.<\/p>\n

\npartners and Blue Ventures\u2019 staff around the world. This team integrates expertise and
\ndeep practical experience with pragmatism and a desire to enable others to deliver lasting
\nchange, by distilling global best practices and knowledge into usable tools, appropriate
\ntraining, and responsive guidance and support. The team is also responsible for delivering
\nonline and face-to-face peer learning exchanges and knowledge-sharing events across the

\npartner organisations in Indonesia. The role will entail providing technical assistance to
\npartner organisations involved in community-based fisheries management and sharing
\ntechnical and marine resource management experiences. Reporting to the Data Science
\nSenior Officer, this is a full-time role based in Blue Ventures\u2019 Denpasar office, with regular
\ntravel to work closely with colleagues, partners, field teams and communities.
\nThe Data Science Officer will provide bespoke training and technical support to local
\npartners in all aspects of fisheries assessment and management, including monitoring and
\nevaluation of landings \u2212 particularly in the design and use of mobile-based data collection
\nsystems \u2212 and supporting local partners in efforts to assist communities in the
\nmanagement of target small-scale fisheries.
\nAdditional responsibilities will include supporting scoping visits and working with partner
\norganisations and colleagues in Blue Ventures\u2019 conservation team to plan community
\nexchanges to share learning and best practices in tropical small-scale fisheries
\nmanagement and locally-led marine conservation.

\nfisheries, marine conservation, and development sectors in Indonesia, a proven track

\n– Training & Capacity Building: Train partners in using the mobile-based data
\ncollection system.
\n– Support Data Quality Assurance: Ensure the accuracy and reliability of data entered into the system.
\n– Support Data Monitoring & Visualisation: Monitor the data visualised on the dashboard to maintain real-time accuracy and usability.
\n– Support Fisheries Data Management Development: Support the enhancement and
\ndevelopment of comprehensive fisheries data management systems.
\n– Support Feedback Integration: Gather and incorporate feedback from partners and
\ncommunities to continuously improve the data collection and management systems.
\n– Support Data Feedback Session: Data support for recommendations for fisheries
\nmanagement with data as the basis for decision-making.
\n– Support the partnership team in reviewing technical aspects of partners\u2019 work plans
\nand reports.
\n– Support technical exchanges for staff, partners, and communities.
\nDocumentation & Communication
\n– Evaluating and documenting key learning, best practices and broader contextual
\nlearning around fisheries management experiences.
\n– Working with partner organisations and Blue Ventures\u2019 conservation team to plan
\nand coordinate outreach and communication efforts around partnership activities,
\nincluding blogs and news articles, as required.<\/p>\n
\nenvironmental, fisheries or conservation science) or at least three years practical
\nexperience in field-based marine conservation.
\n– Experience in small-scale fisheries monitoring and assessment, ideally through
\nparticipatory (community-based) methods.
\n– Experience in teaching and mentoring in data systems, analysis and interpretation.
\n– Experience with mobile data collection systems (ideally including Open Data Kit and
\nKobo Toolbox).
\n– Excellent knowledge of MS Office.
\n– Experience and understanding of how to use Monitoring and Evaluation in
\ndevelopment work.
\n– Experience in data management system development.
\n– Experience in data visualisation (Tableau, Google Data Studio).
\nWe would also love to see
\n– Sensitivity to partner and community needs and interests; humility and commitment
\nto identifying needs and leading local capacity development for conservation.
\n– Experience in tropical developing contexts, including knowledge of marine
\nenvironmental and local cultural contexts.
\n– Fluency in local or national language and professional English.
