The Danish Refugee Council is one of the world’s leading humanitarian NGOs, working in over 40 countries to provide appropriate assistance and protection to refugees, asylum seekers, internally displaced persons, returnees, people on the move and vulnerable local populations/host communities. DRC is currently seeking a highly qualified Protection Officer for a 06-month contract (renewable based on funding and performance) based in Carúpano, Edo. Sucre, Venezuela.

About the work:

DRC is managing its operations in Venezuela, led by the country office in Caracas and three field offices located in Sucre, Apure and Zulia states. DRC Venezuela is implementing activities such as protection monitoring, legal assistance, individual protection assistance for PWSN, briefings for PoC, prevention of human trafficking, rehabilitation of health infrastructure, humanitarian interventions on improved hygiene and food safety practices.

General purpose of the role:

Under the supervision of the Protection Team Leader, the Protection Officer will support the field implementation of all Protection objectives under DRC projects.

Sectoral responsibilities: Advocacy on the rights of persons of concern in the context of their displacement, facilitating access to basic services, individual protection assistance based on vulnerability, prevention of all forms of violence, child protection initiatives, monitoring of needs and raising awareness on rights with host communities and other actors.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

Implementation of the Protection Project

  • Participate in the implementation of general Protection activities in accordance with agreed objectives.
  • Continuously monitor and document the protection needs and risks of persons of concern.
  • Carry out basic tasks within the Protection area, including data collection, identification of patterns and trends, such as arrivals/departures/new flows of persons of interest in the area, etc.
  • Identify and document vulnerable people; facilitate appropriate actions (potentially case management), including referrals to specialist services.
  • Maintain the Protection activities database when necessary and assigned.
  • Provide information for weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports, as well as ad hoc reports when necessary.
  • Ensure the highest quality of Protection interventions and coherence between all ongoing and proposed projects, in line with the overall strategy.
  • Follow the work plans and guidelines of the Protection area.
  • Contribute to the development of tools
  • Comply with local safety regulations at Carúpano Base.
  • Comply with the DRC Code of Conduct.
  • Comply with the policy against sexual exploitation and abuse and use internal safeguard mechanisms if necessary.
  • Comply with DRC codes, principles and core performance competencies.

Required

  • Minimum 1-2 years of relevant experience in humanitarian work, social work, human rights or other similar field work, related to an NGO or other non-profit organization.
  • Field experience and work with urban, and/or rural, and/or indigenous communities.
  • Experience and ability to interview people of all ages, gender and diversity.
  • Good skills in working with tablets and computers.
  • Good skills in MS Word and Excel.
  • Will and ability to learn.

Desirable

  • Diplomatic character.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to create a good team atmosphere.
  • Mastery of the English language is an advantage.
