The Center for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) is a private diplomacy organization founded on the principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence. Its mission is to help prevent, mitigate and resolve armed conflicts through dialogue and mediation.

As part of its agro-pastoral mediation actions, HD wishes to recruit a:

Project coordinator

Agro-pastoral mediation project in Central Africa

Duty station : Bangui, RCA

Duration and type of contract: Service contract, 12 months renewable

Availability : September 1, 2024

In French-speaking Africa, HD conducts its efforts at three complementary levels: the mediation of national political agreements and their implementation as a mediator or support for mediation between governments and armed oppositions; the mediation of local agreements between communities for the prevention, mitigation or resolution of local conflicts, ensuring the establishment of a permanent mechanism for managing community tensions; the mediation of agreements for the sharing of natural resources and transhumance between communities, particularly pastoral and agricultural.

Over the next four years, HD will lead a large-scale regional agro-pastoral mediation project aimed at supporting community-based conflict prevention and management mechanisms; strengthening local, national and sub-regional governance of transhumance; and partnering with park and protected area managers to contribute to the peace-conservation nexus. The project will be conducted primarily in CAR and Chad.

In order to carry out this regional project, under the supervision of the Head of Mission, the Coordinator:

  • Will ensure the coordination of the implementation of the project to achieve the set objectives;
  • Will supervise local mediation processes aimed at preventing, mitigating and resolving agro-pastoral and transhumance conflicts in the countries of intervention, including around protected areas;
  • Will ensure the adaptation of the action to the changes observed, via a real-time analysis of the evolution of the context;
  • Will ensure good relations with partner organizations to build the expected synergies;
  • Will supervise the reporting work as well as the monitoring and evaluation of the action carried out on the ground, and the analyses resulting from it, to feed into the advisory work with States;
  • Will supervise the team in charge of agro-pastoral mediation work in the field;
  • Will manage the project budget in conjunction with the Finance Manager;
  • Will contribute to the management of good relations with the national authorities of the countries of intervention;
  • Will contribute to the design and conduct of national and sub-regional meetings working to strengthen the governance of cross-border transhumance;
  • Will contribute to the management of operational safety.

Profile of the candidates:

  • Hold a university degree in the agro-pastoral field, environmental sciences, human sciences, or any other related field;
  • Have experience in managing cross-border projects, rural development, community support;
  • Have at least 5 years of experience in a similar role within an international NGO in areas affected by armed conflict;
  • Have excellent knowledge of agro-pastoral dynamics in Central Africa, both from an operational point of view and in terms of global analyses:
  • Have excellent managerial skills in a context of teams spread across several countries and a large volume of activities;
  • Proven experience representing an organization in government and diplomatic circles;
  • Be willing to travel regularly to help achieve objectives.
  • Demonstrate organizational and planning skills and have a spirit of initiative, a sense of autonomy and confidentiality;
  • Have excellent writing skills in French;
