About IRC
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) was founded in 1933 on the initiative of Albert Einstein and is an international humanitarian organization with operations in over 40 countries worldwide. Our mission is to help people affected by conflicts or disasters to survive, recover and rebuild their lives.
At the end of 2019, IRC opened an operation in Sweden with the goal of creating engagement and increasing knowledge about humanitarian crises, influencing Swedish politics and collecting funds from the public in Sweden. We currently have 18 employees at our office in Stockholm and also have a Face-to-Face collection team.
Now we are looking for you who want to become our new general secretary and lead the Swedish organization.

****As general secretary, you will have the overall responsibility for leading the business and the team in Sweden. A major focus is on collecting funds from private individuals and private actors, deepening IRC Sweden’s access to government funding in Sweden and other Nordic countries, and increasing IRC Sweden’s political influence on the Nordic humanitarian agenda. Your responsibility is, among other things, to:
- Lead and inspire employees and create a high-performing and safe, inclusive culture.
- Act as an effective ambassador and spokesperson for IRC in the Nordics and build strong relationships with external stakeholders.
- Develop and implement strategies to strengthen IRC’s presence in the Nordics.
- Collaborate with other organizations and authorities and represent the IRC in various forums.
- Ensure cost-effective resource use as well as effective financial and operational controls.
The role reports to IRC Sweden’s board and Senior Vice President IRC Europe. Your base is in Stockholm, with some traveling internationally.
We are looking for you as:
- Has extensive experience in leading a business within the non-profit sector or interest organization in an international context.
- Is an inspiring and confident leader.
- Is a good diplomat and negotiator.
- Has documented experience in advocacy work and relationships with senior stakeholders.
- Has excellent diplomatic and negotiation skills.
- Has deep knowledge of the Swedish and Nordic NGO and aid sector.
- Has very good knowledge of both English and Swedish.
To thrive in the role, a deep commitment to IRC’s mission and values and the ability to operate in a global matrix organization are required.

BACKGROUND
Founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein, the International Rescue Committee is an international humanitarian organsiation with operations in over 40 countries worldwide. Our mission is to help people affected by conflict or disaster to survive, recover and rebuild their lives.
The IRC global network which has its headquarters in New York and is on the ground in more than 40 countries providing emergency relief, relocating refugees and rebuilding lives in the wake of disaster. Through over 20 regional offices in cities across the United States the IRC also helps refugees resettle in the US and become self-sufficient.
IRC Sverige, was established in 2019 to raise private funds and build presence in Sweden and is a registered NGO in Sweden. It now consists of 18 staff and a team of face to face marketeers. Over the next five years’ the plan is to augment this presence by increasing mass market fundraising achieve IRC’s policy ambitions in the Nordics more effectively, maximizing funding from Sida, and cultivate relationships with governmental and high value private donors across the Nordic region.
IRC Sweden is part of IRC in Europe, which employs over 500 staff across the UK, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, and Sweden.
THE PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Executive Director will establish and lead IRC Sverige in its journey of raising funds from individuals private actors, deepen IRC’s access to statutory funding in Sweden and other Nordics; and augment IRC’s policy and advocacy influence on the Nordic humanitarian agenda.
The role, reporting to the Board and to the Senior Vice President, IRC Europe, provides organisational leadership and accountability to IRC Sverige and works closely with members of the IRC Senior Leadership Team for Europe to form and implement organizational objectives.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Leadership
- Provide inspirational and effective leadership of IRC Sverige and embed a high performing culture, that brings together contribution from all IRC functions represented in IRC Sverige
- Provide effective and collaborative matrix management along with colleagues in global functions
- Create sustainable and effective internal structures between global functional departments and IRC Sverige
Stakeholder Engagement
- Act as an effective ambassador with external stakeholders including policy makers, governmental donors and high value private donor across the Nordic region.
- Be the key spokesperson for IRC in the Nordics and effectively engage with all media and opinion-forming organisations to protect and enhance the reputation of IRC.
- Build strong working relationships / partnerships with relevant high-level counterparts and key peers in the Nordic NGO Community.
- Take overall accountability for achieving agreed performance measures for IRC Sverige including private and public fundraising and advocacy.
Planning, Delivery and Performance
- Take overall accountability for the effectiveness of the IRC Sverige operating model to ensure quality, service and cost-effective management of resources
- Contribute to the Europe strategy process by coordinating input from IRC Sverige as required by the SVP Europe
Governance
- The Executive Director reports to the IRC Sverige Board and to the Senior Vice President, IRC Europe
- Represent IRC Sverige at the Europe Senior Leadership Team (SLT) meetings.
- Report to the IRC Sverige Board and prepare Board meetings.
- Leads the IRC Sweden team key roles
- Ensure effective financial and operational controls are in place for the organisation including systems to ensure fundraising operates on a highly ethical basis.
- Oversee an appropriate risk management culture and process
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Essential
- Significant experience in leading, managing and executing across complex Non Governmental Organisation (NGOs) including leading Senior Management Teams.
- Flexibility and the ability to thrive in a global matrixed environment.
- Track record of advocacy and influencing senior stakeholders across government, business and other not-for-profit organisations.
- Ability to build strong relationships across a complex, matrixed stakeholder map evidenced by moving stakeholder groups to action.
- Excellent diplomatic and negotiation skills.
- Deep knowledge of the Swedish and good knowledge of other Nordic not-for-profit and policy environments
- Deep commitment to IRC’s mission and values including diversity, equality and inclusion
- Fluent professional English and Swedish language skills
Desirable
- Experience in an executive leadership position in an international NGO organisation.
- Experience in the international aid sector
