DRC/ACM has been present in Colombia since 2011, focused on capacity building, creating humanitarian demining programs and supporting populations affected by conflict in the south of the country.
We work to enable communities emerging from conflict to regain access to their homes and support the efforts of governments, relief and development organizations to enable community recovery and transition to social and economic development. Currently, we are looking for a Paramedic to work in the Department of Bolívar, in the municipalities assigned to DRC.
Purpose of the position
Carry out life support and health care tasks and activities in the event of an accident or incident in the development of the DRC-ACM program activities, such as the activities of the clearance, ENT and EOD teams, under the direct command of their respective Team Leader and the supervision of the Medical Coordinator.
Responsibilities:
Medical Operations Support – Provide medical oversight of DRC medical response capabilities:
- Provide the necessary medical support in case of emergency, following the organization’s medical protocols, especially what is established in the operational procedures approved by the OACP.
- Know the medical evacuation route in case of emergency, especially the specialized health centers identified and registered in regulatory documents.
- Support the medical coordinator in collecting medical information available in the areas assigned to DRC, such as medical facilities, routes, travel times, levels of care, etc.
- Have an updated list with the names, contact information, ID, Allergies, Medications and Diseases of all members of the ET/D Team and visitors to the APS/APC.
- Verify daily the correct operation of the communications network and indicate to the Team Leader and/or Supervisor if there is a failure in it so that the operation can be suspended.
- Verify daily, before and during the work day, the health status of the members of each team (ENT/Clearing/EOD) and inform the Team Leader and Supervisor if you consider that anyone is not in a position to work safely. You must also ensure good occupational health hygiene practices.
- Under instructions from the Technical Field Manager, he will randomly perform breathalyzer tests on one or all members of the Team before starting the work day.
- Under his professional discretion, he may refer a member of the Team to the Medical Coordinator so that he can order a control test for psychoactive substance consumption or a blood alcohol test.
- Maintain medications and other medical supplies assigned to you, in good condition, complete and current. Keep a record of these and report when a change is required due to deterioration, use or expiration.
Operations:
- Assist the team leader in the analysis of available information (Municipal File, IMSMA events, etc.). • Assist the Team Leader in planning information collection tasks in the field.
- Collect the available information that refers to the suspicion or presence of Explosive Devices in the areas assigned to DRC, consulting the pertinent information sources.
- Assist the team leader in the analysis of the available information that allows concluding the status of the sectors (With contamination/green).
- Assist the team leader in the establishment of polygons, their reports and other regulatory elements. Assist the team leader in a first reconnaissance of the explosive devices present in the area under investigation.
- Collect other socioeconomic data that is requested.
- Collect relevant information for the completion of regulatory documents, such as geographical characteristics, population demographics, points of interest, access routes, etc.
- Assist the team leader in defining intervention prioritization levels.
- Facilitate the development of ACM program activities through the corresponding Community Liaison.
- Follow the operational procedures developed by the organization and approved by the OACP.
Safety and Health at Work
- Know and be clear about DDG’s Occupational Health and Safety policy.
- Seek comprehensive care for your health.
- Provide clear, complete and truthful information about your health status.
- Comply with the rules, regulations and instructions of the DRC SG-SST.
- Report to the immediate supervisor the need to take corrective or preventive actions, which correspond to real or potential non-conformities of the process to which it belongs.
- Participate in training activities, drills and those that are scheduled from safety and health at work.
- Participate and contribute to the fulfillment of the SG-SST policy and objectives.
- Actively participate in the formation of COPASST – Labor Coexistence Committee – Emergency Brigades, as well as the activities they carry out.
- Timely report the dangers and risks detected in your workplace.
- Attend OSH training defined by the SG-SST training program.
- Participate and contribute to the fulfillment of the objectives of the SGSST Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
- Immediately report work accidents, incidents (near accidents) and illnesses diagnosed as work-related to the OSH area and your immediate boss.
- Occupational health surveillance at DRC worksites and bases/camps.
- Ensure the maintenance of order and cleanliness in your position and work area.
- Comply with internal work regulations and road rules.
Medical support, Command and Control:
- Keep the first aid and MEDEVAC skills that the organization instructs you up to date.
- Know in detail the MEDEVAC Plans at your work site, base, camps and/or en route.
- Assist the Team Leader or anyone responsible at all times in the execution of the MEDEVAC in the event of an accident.
- Verify that the MEDEVAC Plan, communications and marking is in condition to be able to start the work.
Logistics and resources:
- Ensure that the equipment and means made available to you are used correctly, keeping them in perfect operational condition (cleanliness and care).
- Immediately report all damage and/or loss of materials/equipment to the team leader.
Cross-cutting responsibilities:
- Attend special training as required.
- Apply humanitarian and DRC principles in the exercise of their functions.
- Be willing to carry out other tasks, in which DRC-ACM trains you, for the best fulfillment of the program’s objectives and indicators, for example, performing the tasks of Community Liaison, Deminer, team leader and Vehicle driver.
- Comply with the organization’s code of conduct and Local Safety Standards.
All DRC staff are expected to undertake the following general duties:
- Work within the framework of DRC’s core values and standards.
- Be familiar with and adhere to all DRC policies and procedures.
- You must comply with traffic laws, vehicle care and maintenance and any other regulations that ensure the care of the vehicle. (eventual).
- Support in the daily maintenance activities of the areas inhabited by DRC, camp, demining areas and others related to the organization.
Education and Skills:
- Auxiliary Technician or Nursing Technologist with certification in pre-hospital care (APH), as well as SVBA (basic and advanced life support).
- Basic knowledge in Safety and Health at Work.
- Preferably basic knowledge in the management of a radio frequency communication system.
- Registration in RETHUS in force.
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information (Clinical Records).
- Communication and organization skills.
- Obtain ENT accreditation, maximum one year after hiring.
Experience:
- 1 year of certified experience outside of internships in hospital care.
Desirable:
Equivalent training and positions in other organizations are valid:
- Preferably basic knowledge in the management of a radio frequency communication system.
- One (1) year of experience in quality management.
- Previous experience in occupational health and safety management systems.
- Work experience in international cooperation organizations and/or development and non-profit organizations (international or national).
- B1-B2 driver’s license.
Skills:
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
- Communication and organization skills.
- Ability to work in remote and complex environments.
Languages:
- English desirable.
